The Magic Tree

COL235-001The Magic Tree is the last of the collagraphs I have printed for the year.  The plate was made with real lichen and tree bark.  The plate was quite fragile and is why I have only made 3 prints in the series plus one Test Print.  This edition is now available for sale in my Etsy shop here.

The image is 5×5 inches on A4 size, Acid Free, Mixed Media paper (bright white).  A couple of options for framing are shown above.

Thank you for visiting and reading about my art journey this year.  I am looking forward to seeing what I end up doing next year!  Until then, happy creating!

The Green Man-A Happy Accident

In this run up to Christmas, I haven’t had any work on, so I have had plenty of time to catch up with things, write some blog posts, scan prints and a host of other things.  I have even managed to tidy up my dining room and now we can eat at the table.  I have now finished printing up the collagraphs I made here, and will be having a short break from printing to enjoy doing other things.

COL231-001As I mentioned before, the first print is usually a test print.  On one of my walks, I found some moss, lichen, and bark.  I made up a collagraph plate with moss and bark and some other plant matter.  I was hoping that it would look like a rotten tree trunk that I had seen in the woods.  When putting the first print through the press, I got the above, minus the pencil work.  I had to raise the rollers up during printing as the plate wouldn’t go through properly.  I ended up with a dark line at the top of the print where I started rolling.  The printing got better and even the more prints I made, as the press does flatten down the plant matter.

However, I wasn’t 100% with my prints, until I turned it over.

COL231-001The print line made a natural surface where a plant is sitting.  As I started to embellish each print with watercolor to make a surface, I noticed that there was a sort of face in the bark, so I highlighted that with some Derwent Graphitint pencils.  That is how I made The Green Man.    Six of these were printed on Acid Free Mixed Media paper and are now listed in my Etsy Shop here.

The image is 4×5 inches on A4 paper and can be framed in a more square format or portrait.

A Fatefull End, Collagraph

I find interesting things when out walking with the dogs.  This time it was the remains of a black bird.  Gruesome as it may sound, it was mostly feathers that remained.  I do not know how the bird met its fateful end, but I reckon that either a fox or a crow did it in.  I spelled fateful with two Ls in my title on purpose.  It may be wrong, but it seemed right.

I only made two prints plus a test print as the quills were starting to deteriorate.  These were printed on Saunders Waterford 140lb hot press watercolor paper, 8.5 x 14 inches, with a deckled edge on 3 sides.

I have listed these on Etsy here.  You can also visit my shop by clicking the link on the sidebar.

I have also framed these plates as I like how they look.  They have been mounted onto mountcard and placed into a ready made frame with matt.  Feathers can be tricky to print with as they are 3 dimensional and will not lie flat.  It is essential to seal the plate and yet be able to retain some detail during the printing process.  These plates are now retired and will not be used again.
